LIGHT – Bruce Munro at Cheekwood

Last night, my family and I visited the LIGHT display by Bruce Munro at Cheekwood in Nashville.  Cheekwood Botanical Garden & Museum of Art is a 55 acre estate built by the Maxwell House Coffee fortune. It is a beautiful property, and they regularly have special events and art exhibits. I have never regretted the money spent on admission for these events, and the current LIGHT exhibit is no exception. My 3 year old nephew loved it and cried when it was time to leave. That speaks loudly of the beauty of this event. The grounds are also packed with mums of every color for fall. I wish we had arrived before dark just to see the mums better! Don’t wait any longer if you haven’t seen this exhibit, because it’s almost over. November 10th is the last day for LIGHT by Bruce Munro, so get to it. You will want to go back when Cheekwood puts up their Christmas trees.

Shiny Happy People

These folks are friends of mine. We go to church together. Sometimes when you make friends at church, you only see their shiny side. I get tired of the shiny plastic masks people wear. I want friends who will admit that life is not perfect, and that we need each other for encouragement. That is the kind of friends the Beasleys are. They don’t put on a mask for church. They will hug me and give me a smile, and we will pray for each other. I consider it a privilege to photograph these friends who’s shine comes from within.

Queen Victoria

She’s only 3 years old, but little Victoria greatly impresses me. Her parents went to college with me and my husband, and Victoria is so much like her mother. She is beautiful like a perfect porcelain doll, but she is very smart and strong and free spirited. Of course she loves the horses. She has that fire inside. Of course she asked me for butterflies. She wants to see them fly. What other name could she have but that of a queen?

Mary Ann is 90!

Our family is very fortunate. Both of my mother’s parents are still going strong at 91 and 90. What is their secret? Is it sheer stubborn will to never stop? While that could account for a portion of their longevity, I know Mary Ann and Anthony to be smart, resourceful, hard-working, constantly loving their neighbor, and never being idle with their time. That is not to say that they haven’t always had fun. My grandmother is one of the most social people I’ve ever known. She loves a party. She especially loves a pool party. I think I inherited my love of the water from this woman, and it must be a strong gene. For her 90th birthday on Labor Day , the immediate family gathered at my uncle’s house (because he has a pool) to eat, swim, and celebrate our matriarch. We love our “Mommy Ann”. Happy 90th!

Finally! Photos Of Their Own

My aunt and uncle have not had professional pictures made of themselves since they were married. WHAT? I could not believe it when they told me. Along with my mother, these two used to be the ones taking all the family pictures. I guess it’s true that the photographers rarely get pictures of themselves. I remember old black and white film in a Nikon and a lens in my face. Uncle Marc is especially good at getting a candid shot when you don’t expect it. Some find that annoying, but now I am right beside him grabbing those slices of life. They have also been an example of servanthood for me. Marc and Trudy have entertained me since I was small, and they have continued to love and support me throughout my life. I cannot count how many times I have called my aunt for medical advice and support. (It’s nice to have a medical doctor for an aunt). She is my mother when my mother is not available, and sometimes, my mother just tells me to call Trudy. I am so glad to finally be able to do something for them. A photo session of their own? My pleasure!
